HISTORY
The idea of building a championship golf course in Russia originated when Dr. Armand Hammer, an American with a voracious entrepreneurial spirit, was invited to Russia. The purpose of this visit…what did Russia need, to entice Western business? The legendary answer…limousines and a golf course! Under the direction of Ivan Ivanovich Sergeev, current Head of GlavUpDK and owners of Le Meridien Moscow Country Club, construction began on what would become, Russia's first and so far only 18-hole golf course.
The very first Russian Open Golf Tournament was held at the Club in 1993 on the front nine holes. Le Meridien Moscow Country Club is now the permanent venue for this event. In 1996 it became an event on the PGA European Challenge Tour. Players from 24 countries competed for prize money totaling $100,000. Carl Watts of England won the tournament, and Alexander Strunkin of Moscow Country Club emerged from this tournament as Russia's first professional golfer!
The Club's growth and elevation to international championship status continued in 1997 when once again it hosted the PGA European Challenge Tour and the 1997 Russian Open had the highest prize fund on the Tour - $140,000. The 1998 Russian Open brought a new field of professional golfers and once again the highest prize fund on the Challenge Tour. The Club joined forces with BMW for the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Russian Open and saw a new professionalism emerge with BMW's participation in these tournaments.
The importance that the Russian Government places on Le Meridien Moscow Country Club is evident through the President's patronage of the President of Russia Golf Cup, which takes place at the Club each year on 31st May. This prestigious charity event, which is dedicated to International Children's Day was established by former President Boris Yeltsin and is now under the patronage of President Vladimir Putin and has politicians, diplomats and business executives from around the world competing alongside Russia's junior golfers for the main trophy.
